Mechanical Design Team Lead

Help accelerate large-scale plastic recycling by leading the mechanical design team behind BlueAlp’s advanced chemical recycling technology. We are looking for a Mechanical Design Team Lead who will take responsibility for the mechanical design activities supporting BlueAlp’s pyrolysis plants and technology development.

This role sits at the heart of a fast-growing climate technology company and directly supports the engineering, construction, and operation of industrial-scale plastic recycling facilities.

About the role

As Mechanical Design Team Lead, you lead a team of mechanical designers and engineers responsible for the design and fabrication engineering of piping systems, structural steel, and mechanical equipment (including vessels) for BlueAlp process installations. BlueAlp not only designs but also fabricates its installations, which means engineering deliverables directly support in-house and external production. The team also delivers complete and accurate as-built documentation after construction.

You combine hands-on technical expertise with people leadership and ensure that mechanical designs meet BlueAlp’s quality standards, project requirements, and applicable codes and regulations. You report directly to the Director Engineering .

The mechanical design team currently consists of 5 team members .

Your responsibilities

Mechanical Design & Engineering

• Lead and coordinate mechanical design activities for piping, structural steel, and vessels across projects

• Ensure high-quality and consistent delivery of layouts, detail drawings, piping isometrics (ISO’s) for fabrication , fabrication drawings, and as-built documentation

• Review, check, and approve mechanical and construction drawings, while also producing and modifying drawings yourself where needed

• Contribute to and review strength and design calculations in line with project specifications and applicable standards

• Ensure designs comply with relevant codes, norms, and internal engineering guidelines

Project Coordination

• Align mechanical design activities with Project Engineering and other disciplines • Support engineering schedules, workload planning, and prioritization across projects • Act as technical interface for internal stakeholders and external engineering partners

Leadership & People Management & Hands-on Contribution

• Lead, coach, and develop a mechanical design team of 5 engineers/designers

• Actively contribute yourself to mechanical design work, reviews, and problem-solving, especially on complex or critical scopes

• Foster a culture of quality, ownership, and continuous improvement

• Support competence development, onboarding, and knowledge sharing within the team

• Conduct performance reviews and support professional growth

Quality & Continuous Improvement

• Safeguard engineering quality, documentation standards, and version control • Identify and implement improvements in workflows, tools, and engineering practices • Stay up to date with developments in mechanical design standards and technologies

Your profile

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or similar

• Solid experience in mechanical design within the process industry or industrial installations

• Strong knowledge of piping, structural steel, and pressure vessels

• Experience with design reviews, as-built documentation, and engineering change processes

• Familiar with relevant standards and codes (e.g. EN, ASME, PED)

• Experience leading or mentoring engineers and designers

• Fluent in English (Dutch is a strong plus)

• Engineering tools such as TEKLA, CADworx, BIM (Autodesk Construction Cloud).
